Nigerian Defence chief, Gen. Christopher Musa (L) seated with the Nigerien Defence chief, Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou (R)
There were signs of improved relations between Nigeria and Niger as the chiefs of staff of both countries met In a symbolic meeting. General Moussa Salaou Barmou, Chief of Staff of the Niger Armed Forces, welcomed his Nigerian counterpart, General Christopher Musa, this Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in Niamey.
This meeting, the first of its kind in more than a year, suggests a possible détente between the two neighbouring countries after a period of diplomatic tension.
The Nigerian defence chief, who is Chairman of ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, had during a recent meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, called for the return of the three countries to the regional bloc.
Musa said that the return of the three countries was a necessary step in defeating the insecurity ravaging the region, especially insurgency.
He said that efforts were ongoing to ensure that the three countries returned to the regional bloc, adding that all hands must be on deck to curtail insecurity in West Africa.
Today’s visit to Niamey, sources say, is not unconnected with the call made by the military chief.
As the insurgency spirals, security experts say the need to present a coordinated front beyond political spats is vital to end the scourge.
