ECOWAS Chairman, Bio Mourns Buhari’s Death, Says Africa Lost A True Patriot

resident Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone,  who is also ECOWAS Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has sympathised with the Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu, Nigerians, and the Buhari family over the death of former Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, on July 13 in a London clinic.

Bio issued a press statement in Freetown on July 14, describing the late ex-president as a great statesman whose devotion to Nigeria would be an enduring legacy to his name.

The ECOWAS Chairman said he recognised with respect the leadership shown by Buhari during his time as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

In the statement, Bio said “It is with deep regret that His Excellency, President Julius Bio, mourns the passing of his dear friend and former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

“His valiant commitment to the advancement of regional peace, stability, and economic integration was a characteristic of his rule.

“Even in this time of profound sorrow, Sierra Leone is with the people of Nigeria. We stand with all West Africans and the global community in mourning the loss of a true patriot.”
