Head of the Nigerièn military junta, General Abdourahamane Tiani, arrived Bamako, the Malian capital, for a working visit, his first trip outside the country since assuming power. He was received at the airport by the Head of the Malian interim government, Colonel Assimi Goita.

The visit is coming ahead of Mali’s plans to host ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS) for several meetings in the coming weeks with the aim of ironing out the operational details of the new Sahel alliance, it said in a statement Thursday.

The ASS is an organisation formed out of a military and economic pact signed in September by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in September.  The pact includes an alliance for mutual defence in the event of an attack on the “sovereignty and territorial integrity” of any of the countries. It also advances a united front in the fight against jihadism in their countries and a plan to strengthen economic ties.

It is believed that talks between the two leaders touched on security, economy and other governance issues.
