Nigeria’s labour unions reach deal with government, may suspend planned nationwide indefinite strike.

The Nigerian government and the natuonal Labour unions have reached an agreement to suspend the planned nationwide indefinite strike after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Addressing newsroom after the four-hour meeting, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero said the N25,000 salary increase announced by Nigerian president Bola Tinubu in his Independence Day anniversary broadcast is now applicable across board and not only “low-grade worker”.

It is also reported that the Nigerian federal government is to remove 7.5% Value Added Tax, VAT on diesel to ensure reduction in price of the product that is mostly used to power factories and offices.

The leadership of the labour unions will meet with organs of workers unions to announce the suspension of the strike, which was scheduled to begin from midnight of Tuesday, October 3

The Nigerian federal government and the unions are to resume further talks on Monday to work out issues surrounding fuel subsidy removal interventions.
