The National Working Committee (NWC) of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed reports of the resignation of its Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and the party Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The NWC says that the Deputy National Chairman of the party for the north, Senator Abubakar Kyari, takes over the leadership of the party.

There had been speculations about the resignation of the chairman, following reports of internal rift that had threatened the party’s cohesion. Reports revealed that, until Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged the presidential candidate of the party, Adamu and some members of the NWC did not support his ambition.

Information also came to light that some members of the NWC had accused Adamu of running the party as a personal affair. Recently, the party’s National vice chairman for the North-west, Salihu Lukman, repeatedly called for the removal of Adamu and Omisore, accusing the duo of violating the constitution of the party and operating a murky financial system, and at some point took legal action against the NWC.

The rift in the party came to a head when Adamu distanced the NWC from the choice of the principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives, saying their appointment was coming to him as a “rumour.”

The new leadership has postponed the earlier National Executive Committee meeting that was scheduled to hold on 18th and 19th of July.
