The delegation sent by President Bola Ahmed to Niger Republic with a mandate to expeditiously resolve the current political impasse in the country is currently in negotiations with the Gen. Tchiani-led military junta.

The delegation is led by former Nigerian military head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar who, according to the statement, left Abuja for Niamey after a meeting with Mr Tinubu.

Mr. Abubakar is joined by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray.

The president also sent a separate delegation, led by former secretary to the Nigerian government, Babagana Kingibe, to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger crisis.

Mr. Tinubu directed the two delegations to engage vigorously with all stakeholders to do whatever it takes to ensure a peaceful resolution of the situation in Niger.

In a statement that seemed to express the president’s non-alignment with conflicting geopolitical interests of other nations. The president asserted that “We don’t want to hold briefs for anybody. Our concern is democracy and the peace of the region”.

There have been intense pressure on the regional body, ECOWAS, to avoid military conflict with Niger, as the consequences would be dire for the entire region.
