Nigerien Minister of Oil, Barké Bako Mahaman Moustaph
Niger is preparing to launch the construction of a new refinery and a petrochemical complex in the Dosso region, in addition to the existing refinery in Zinder.
These new facilities, scheduled to come into operation at the end of 2025, aim to increase the country’s oil production fivefold and position it as a major player in the field of oil exports.
The official launch of the project was marked by the establishment of a technical committee dedicated to monitoring the process. This committee, made up of 22 members, will have the mission of steering the different stages of the project, from the selection of strategic partners to contract negotiations.
According to the Minister of Oil, Barké Bako Mahaman Moustapha, the objective is to start the refinery’s activities at the end of 2025 (i.e., in 18 months). “What remains to be done today is the selection of strategic partners and the start of work,” he said.
The Dosso refinery will have a minimum production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. It will be implemented in a modular manner to speed up the construction process. A pre-feasibility study has already been carried out by the competent services of Niger.
This major project will allow Niger to strengthen its energy independence and generate significant revenues through the export of petroleum products. It will also contribute to job creation and stimulation of economic growth in the Dosso region and the country as a whole, sources say.
