Niger Military junta will not host ECOWAS/AU/UN delegation, official statement says.

The military junta in Niger has notified the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that it will not be hosting the joint ECOWAS/AU/UN mission that was expected to arrive Niamey Tuesday, August 8.

The junta has prevented the mission from proceeding in the lead-up to the Extraordinary summit scheduled for Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria. In a released statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Niger Republic, the military leadership expressed concerns that the public anger provoked by ECOWAS sanctions could jeopardize the safety of the delegation.

The foreign ministry stated, “Given the current atmosphere of public anger and uprising as a result of ECOWAS sanctions, it is not feasible to host this delegation under the necessary conditions of peace and security.”

ECOWAS has not responded to the statement by the Nigerièn junta.
