New Prime Minister appointed in Burkina Faso, after sudden dismissal of former popular government head, Tambela

Days after Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, dismissed his Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela, and dissolved the entire government. He has announced the appointment, on December 9, of a new Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, who was formerly the Minister of State for Communication, Culture, Tourism, and the Arts.

The dismissal of Tambela was announced in a decree signed by the junta leader on Friday. However, it did not specify why the prime minister was sacked, but said members of the dissolved government will continue to serve until a new cabinet is appointed.

Tambela, a civilian, was named prime minister in 2022, shortly after Ibrahim Traoré seized power in a coup. He had held the office of prime minister since October 21st, 2022.

Rumours that he had been dismissed over the embezzlement of 3 billion CFA Francs meant for displaced and vulnerable people have been described as completely false, as that affair dates back to 2020 when the Prime Minister was not even known in government circles.

His dismissal comes barely weeks after another civilian prime minister, Choguel Maïga, was sacked by military leader, Gen Assimi Goïta, in neighbouring Mali.

Ouédraogo was officially sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Burkina Faso in a ceremony held in Ouagadougou and presided over by Mathias Traoré, Secretary-General of the Government and the Council of Ministers.

A seasoned journalist and prominent cultural figure, who was previously appointed to the position of Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism on October 25th, 2022, Ouédraogo takes on the critical responsibility of steering the ship of government during a period marked by significant security and economic challenges for the nation.

Expectations are high as the new Prime Minister begins his tenure. His initial actions will be closely monitored as Burkina Faso continues its determined efforts to address multidimensional challenges and move toward a more stable and prosperous future under the leadership of its administration.

Concerns that junta leaders in the Sahel are trying to prolong their stay in power, by delaying elections meant to return their countries to civilian rule, have been expressed by many who say their attempts at reshuffling cabinet may indicate opposition within government circles.

However, sources say attempts to remain in power by the military would hardly be threatened by members of the government, especially as public support remains strong, and government officials, like Tambela, have reiterated their endorsement of the military government.
