Mali is carrying out a major military operation on the Algerian border, aiming to recover and secure its territory.
After the recapture of the town of Inafarak, the Malian army deployed troops in the locality of Boghassa, heading towards Tin-Zautin, a strategic Tuareg stronghold. A military convoy accompanied by reconnaissance drones was spotted, showing Mali’s determination not to cede any centimeter to armed groups.
This operation is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace, an operation it appears to have pursued with intensity since the military junta took over in 2020.
Efforts by the Malian armed forces have resulted in the recapture of several strategic towns in the country that were under the control of Tuareg separatists and Islamists. A significant success was the recapture of the northern strategic town of Kidal, which had been the base of separatist rebels for ten years.
In fact, This Tuareg separatist stronghold on the edge of the desert in northern Mali had eluded Bamako’s control for a decade, representing a major blow to national sovereignty.
Calls for the withdrawal of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from the country was partly a reaction to the mission’s refusal to actively join forces with the Malian military to seize control of this important northern stronghold.
Since the start of the transition in 2020, the Goïta-led military junta has made the restoration of national sovereignty their raison d’être with the main objective of flying the Malian flag over all of its territory.
To achieve this, the Malian army has spared no expense. According to reports, the armed forces have received substantial amounts of drones, fighter planes and armoured vehicles, which appear to have turned the tide in recent battles.
In spite of some challenges, these recent military victories give Goïta a lot more room to manoeuver, regional security experts say.
