Reports from Guinea say gunmen stormed the main prison in Conakry, the capital of Guinea on Saturday, freeing 2008 coup leader Moussa “Dadis” Camara, who is under trial for the death of opposition supporters in 2009. He was taken along with three other high-ranking officers, including military figures Claude Pivi and Blaise Goumou. The duo were also being tried alongside Camara
Witnesses told Reuters they heard heavy gunfire at about 04:00GMT from the Kaloum area, the political and administrative heart of the seaside city of Conakry, where the presidential palace and other official administrative buildings are located and where Camara and others were held at the Central House prison.
The country’s Justice Minister, Charles Alphonse Wright, speaking to Radio Fim FM, said “It was around 0500 (0500 GMT) that heavily armed men burst into the Central House of Conakry.
It is not clear who is responsible for the operation to free the former coup leader and military head of the country. However, Wright told the local Radio station “We will find them. And those responsible will be held accountable.”
Camara is on trial for a 2009 massacre which left at least 157 people killed and at least 109 women raped. Tens of thousands had gathered at Conakry’s stadium to dissuade him from running for president when soldiers, police, and militia members opened fire on the crowd.
